A USB data blocker (also known as a USB condom) is a device that can protect your electronic devices from potential cyber attacks when using a public USB port.
USB data blockers work by blocking the data transfer pins in a USB cable while allowing the power transfer pins to function normally. This means that the USB data blocker allows your device to charge while preventing any unauthorized data exchange or malware injection.
“Public” USB ports include charging stations in airports, bus stations, train stations, restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, public libraries, retail stores and public parks. Various forms of public transportation including airplanes, buses and trains may offer USB charging.
USB ports in hotel rooms, including those built into lamps or other devices can be a security risk.
And don’t forget about rental cars. Connecting your smartphone to a rental vehicle without a USB data blocker could potentially upload private information including contact lists and location data that will remain after you return it.
